More About Dykes With Drills Virtual Workshops

Dykes With Drills began offering virtual workshops in April 2020, in response to the global pandemic. We felt that virtual workshops would be a great way to engage and bring our community together, in addition to providing an alternative to local in-person workshops (Chicago and Bay area) and community build events (Bay Area). We have seen such value in engaging our community in this alternative format that we have made the choice to host virtual workshops ongoingly.

DWD virtual workshops are either Build at Home workshops or Virtual Maker workshops.   The Build at Home workshops teach participants how to use tools to build something for their home (such as a stepstool, charcuterie board, or entryway storage/coat rack, etc). The Virtual Maker workshops teach participants a new skill to make beautiful art (such as pyrography, wood veneer wall art, or a woven wall hanging, etc.). Both workshop types include a materials kit that is shipped to each participant prior to the start of the workshop. In addition to the kits, most virtual workshops require participants to have some tools at home to participate, though some include all of the tools and materials needed in the kit.

Virtual workshops take place on the Zoom platform and are typically between 1 ½ and 3 hours long. If a virtual worksop is longer than this, we will break it up into multiple sessions.  Virtual workshops are typically held on weekends between the times of 10am-2pm PST, as our community includes people from 4 time zones, which makes evenings challenging.  All virtual workshops include a virtual TA that will manage the virtual classroom, so the instructor can focus on teaching. The virtual TA will admit the participants to the zoom classroom when the class begins, welcome everyone and give them a brief overview of DWD and will also go over the rules for participation (keep themselves muted to cut down on background noise and how to ask questions during the workshop) and manage the participants questions throughout the virtual class. If you are planning to login on two devices to give the participants to different views of what you are teaching them, the virtual TA can manage your screen views to make sure the participants are seeing the best view throughout the workshop.

So What’s In It for You?

First you get to work with an awesome organization. Second you get to engage with other Dykes With Drills members around the country and teach them some new skills. And third, we pay all of our teachers a base rate of $25/hour for the duration of the workshop, plus 2 hours of prep time if you prep the materials for the kits. Then on top of all that, you get 50% of the revenue after the costs to run the workshop are deducted. So what do you say? Click the link above and join the DWD team today!
