NOLA Carpentry Camp
In this 6 day carpentry camp, participants will be taught about reclaimed wood and architectural materials, and how to build with these materials. Additionally, participants will learn the safety and use of a variety of hand and power tools, such as drills, miter saws, circular saws, reciprocating saws, etc. to build market stalls out of reclaimed doors and vendor booths out of reclaimed pallets.
The carpentry camp is broken up into two camp series. Participants can sign up for the entire camp or can sign up for one of the two series. Information on each workshop series below.
Series 1: Building With Reclaimed Materials
During these two classes we will be building art market stalls out of reclaimed doors and teaching the steps to flipping or repurposing reclaimed architectural materials.
Series 2: Reclaimed Wood and Palette Building
During these four classes we will be building art market vendor booths out of reclaimed palettes and teaching the safe and responsible use of reused wood.

Do you have a low scent tolerance? We ask that our participants refrain from using extreme scents, though cannot guarantee the workshop space will be scent free. Please know that sawdust is present in the shop and we have masks available upon request.
Are you ASL? We currently don’t have translation available, and would love to work with you about how you can access our workshops.

Series 1:
The first day will consist of safety training, tool demonstration, and building the stalls and structural supports. Tools used for this class will be drills, miter saw, and circular saw. Throughout the build we will discuss the challenges of using reclaimed materials. The second day we will continue working on the doors. At the end of the day there will be an optional field trip to The Green Project where participants have the opportunity to shop and buy reclaimed architectural materials with the help of the instructors to design and build a project of their own. Afterwards anyone interested could go to a local taco restaurant for dinner and drinks and we can discuss their new projects based on the materials they purchased.
Series 2:
The beginning of the class will start off with safety training, tool demonstration, and design. Tools used during this build will be drills, miter saw, and reciprocating saw. Throughout the build we will talk to structural stability and joinery needed when using reclaimed wood. On the last day, after participants have had plenty of time working with palettes we will assist them in designing and building their own plant stand using reclaimed wood.
So what is the Recycle Challenge Parade and Festival?
The Recycle Challenge addresses a serious global need to reduce waste, and transform waste into viable products or vibrant works of art. The annual event intertwines culture and collaboration with paying homage to historical connections. Artists will be on site to demonstrate both on location and virtually, ways that trash can become anything and proceeds from the event will go to support "Whose Magazine: A Youth Publication".
As a partner, Dykes With Drills will be building all of the vendor stalls and booths for the Recycle Challenge Festival, which will take place April 21-23, 2023 at St. Roch Market.
